The Haworth Old Post Office is a historic 19th-century building which was used by the Brontë family. The original early victorian counter remains over which the famous sisters would have handed their novel manuscripts including Jane Eyre and Wuthering Heights for posting to London publishers and from where they would have collected mail. The building served as the village post office during the 1800s and included a Money Order office. The original cash draw also remains (pictured).
The Old Post Office has now been converted into a café and restaurant and is regularly visited by news crews (see images) and Influencers.
According to the café web site- “Branwell Brontë is said to have stopped at the Post Office on several occasions after over-indulging at The Black Bull. His friend, the Post Master John Hartley, let him sleep in the upstairs back room which, in those days, had a clear view to the parsonage. His sister, Emily, would light a candle in the window of the parsonage when their father, Patrick, had gone to bed, as a signal to Branwell that it was safe to come home.”
