Wainsgate Chapel is a former Baptist chapel and grave yard dating from 1859. Unfortunately, declining membership meant the chapel finally closed in 2001. The chapel is run by a dedicated group of volunteers who have formed the Wainsgate Chapel Charity. The Church Heritage Trust has recently undertaken a major renovation of the building prior to a transfer of ownership to the Charity. The photographs show the building while the renovations were taking place and then following completion.
David Whittaker, Construction Project Manager - ‘I love working on old buildings. You become very attached to the buildings you are working on – they have their own personalities and quirks.’
Jo Cubbon, Chair of Trustees - ‘So many beautiful old buildings are being restored, refurbished and repurposed by groups of local people. It struck me that we don’t often talk about what these groups of local people give to their communities in these projects, their time, devotion, expertise and sheer determination to achieve success. We should also consider the huge offer these buildings give back to the people too. Being part of community groups who are able to work together to preserve and understand their heritage and leave a legacy for future generations will have a significant impact on their own well-being and sense of worth. Being involved in Wainsgate Chapel and working with a team to support the restoration of the building ….has had a huge positive impact on my personal well-being-making friends, having a feeling of self-worth and contributing to the legacy of my new local community.’
